SICKLE CELL AND LIVER DYSFUNCTION

under-waterfall-FIDue to Sickle Cell disease problems and the amount of tablets taken over the years, it is not unlikely for someone who suffers from Sickle Cell to have liver damage.  I am not talking about having liver disease but about perhaps ones’ liver not functioning as it should.

Due to the shape of the sickled red blood cells and getting entangled in the blood stream or blood vessels, one of the areas of damage is the liver and another reason is because of the treatment of the disease, for example blood transfusion, which can also cause iron overload.

With various forms of medical science, there are side effects to it.  So, I have a crisis, get admitted into hospital and I am given blood transfusion but this could damage my liver.  Or the amount of tablets I take, especially very strong pain killers like Morphine can also do damage.  What can I/you do to help myself/yourself?

My simple remedy is good nutrition and go for natural options whenever you can.  Truth be told, I still rely on tablets and take them when I have to.  My answer to all this is eat nutritious food. Eat food that is good for the liver: Beetroots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, beans, apple, garlic, red onion, leafy greens, ox liver etc…Check out my list of ‘food high in iron’ on this blog.
