SICKLE CELL AND THE TREATMENT OF GLUTATHIONE

The sickle cell anemia treatment of boosting glutathione is not new. Few studies look at the direct connection of boosting blood by boosting glutathione.
Anemic patients who take various types of cysteine will typically have an increase in blood counts. There is a relationship with the intake of glutathione precursors and co-factors and the rise in blood counts.
What is Sickle Cell Anemia?
Sickle cell anemia is a blood disease that affects millions of people around the world. There is no specific cure for everyone. Typically the symptoms and complications are treated. For some, bone marrow transplants may offer a cure. This is not for everyone.
The symptoms of sickle cell anemia vary from person to person. Some face chronic pain and or tiredness.
Managing Sickle Cell Anemia Pain
Traditional pain treatment include over the counter medicine and heating pads and increasing fluid intake. Dehydration complicates the disease and makes the symptoms worse.
The most common pain medications include acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
In more severe cases, narcotics such as meperidine, morphine, oxycodone, and others. (Narcotic abuse and addiction are issues that must be considered in any pain control plan.) More severe cases involve going to the hospital to be treated.
The Glutathione Sickle Cell Anemia Treatment
Do a search on Glutathione and Sickle Cell Anemia or any of the related complications and as the study above indicates, there is a beneficial connection when the glutathione is boosted.
It is important that you do not stop any treatment under your doctors care or augment that care with out first talking to him. Boosting your glutathione helps in many ways. In some instances, the way you boost it may be not be good for you compared to other ways.
The only way to know for sure is to talk to your doctor. If you need to find a doctor that is an expert on boosting glutathione and sickle cell anemia, please feel free to contact the webmaster for direction on how to locate a doctor in your area.
There are two ways to boost your glutathione in this sickle cell treatment. One is an all natural whey protein isolate and the other a chemical derived cysteine.
Both have been looked at in human studies. Both work.
What is the relationship of glutathione and sickle cell anemia? One of the most devastating blood diseases is sickle cell anemia or sickle cell disease (SCD). This information and the study we have reviewed may hold some hope.
Consider the science
First it is important to recognize that glutathione is in virtually every cell in our body and out side of some organs such as our digestive tract and in our lung lining.
Considering that it is also in every organ and that our blood is an organ, the glutathione and sickle cell anemia connection is important to look into.
Further making the connection and considering the pain modulating benefits some have with increased glutathione, the benefits could be many.
The best way to benefit from a boost your glutathione is to take bonded whey protein isolate that is rich in cysteine.
Cysteine is one of the primary building blocks of the tri-peptide glutathione.
Consider a study on glutathione and SCD in the American Journal, The report indicated that the mechanism causing lower glutathione (GSH) concentration in sickle cell disease (SCD), is unknown.
The conclusion suggest that the lower blood cell GSH of SCD sufferers is not due to a suppression of the body’s building GSH or even impaired regeneration but rather an increase in consumption.
In addition, the lower blood cell cysteine concentration along with the faster rate of GSH synthesis strongly suggest that the dietary cysteine supply is not sufficient to meet all of the body’s demands, thus… cysteine may be a conditionally essential amino acid in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease.
Glutathione Diet Basics
multi-vitamin
Water Cures Protocol Pure water and the electrolytes found in unprocessed salt on their own can increase your glutathione dramatically. This costs almost nothing. More importantly, GSH is dependent on hydration. The better hydrated you are, the easier the time your body will have making glutathione.Next in importance are the sulfur containing foods.
Sulfur Containing Foods
- garlic – kale – onions – broccoli – kale – water cress – cabbage – asparagus – brussel sprouts
Dairy Products
- unpasteurized milk (should be hormone and antibiotic free) icotta cheese – cottage cheese yogurt
- eggs – milk (decreased in pasteurized milk)
- whey protein (undenatured bio active)
Grains
- wheat germ – granola – oats – oat flakes
Meats
- pork – sausage meat – chicken – turkey – duck
Note: the heat used to prepare any of the above foods is usually sufficient to destroy the cysteine. Therefore, the benefits would be minimal.
Fruits
- Watermelon
Foods / Supplements with Cysteine to Boost Glutathione
- Raw Eggs (cooking and high speed blending can destroy the cysteine)
- Fish Oil
- Alpha lipolic acid – b12, folate, b6, critical for producing glutathione and great for helping manage stress. They also work as a mild diuretic.
- Selenium: we need two hundred mcg a day. Get from 2 Brazil Nuts a day
- Milk thistle: there are a number of studies that show the benefit.
- Exercise…regular start slowly and build up to thirty minutes a day.

Very informative. Well done sis
Hello and thank you very much for your kind words. Kind Regards
Hi I’m Ifeoma and I’ve been living with sickle cell for 22 years. I recently came across your blog and I have a few questions. First I’ve been thinking of going to the UK for my masters and I was wondering about what support I can get over there and if I would be able to cope well especially with the weather? Secondly I would like to know if you follow a strict diet daily?
Hello Ifeoma, thank you for your questions:
1) People with SCD live in the UK and there is actually a Sickle Cell foundation in London but you might go and study outside London. If you pay and are a foreign student, you will have access to the country’s medical facilities as a SC patient.
2) I don’t follow a strict diet but I am mindful of what I eat and drink. I try to eat well and hence my blog talking a lot about food. I also write for Punch online or newspaper every Saturday. Do check out my articles online.
Wishing you well
