Sickle Cell and Wellness

Today, I would like to talk to you about looking after yourself.  This is very important as someone with Sickle Cell.  I know you are used to my talking about food and their benefits but guess what?

If you don’t also look after yourself and take good care of yourself, the food might not work as it should.

The things that Sickle Cell does not like is worry, stress or any form of anxiety.  I know!  I have been on those evil roads and they have caused so much damage to my body and my health.  When I talk about damage to my body, I am talking in terms of the pain that worry, stress or anxiety brings my way; I get sick and the pain is so much at that moment, I just want to die, as no pain killers or tablets seem to be working.

Sometimes, you can feel it in your stomach, as it cramps up or your heart rate increases, breathing can become laboured and you sweat more.  Whatever way, this manifests itself in your body, it is not good for someone with Sickle Cell.

These can lead to heart attacks and stomach ulcers, because your body has tensed ready to respond to the threat you are feeling, this muscle tension can turn into aches and pains causing headaches, back pain, weak legs and trembling. This tension can also affect your digestive system triggering bouts of constipation or diarrhoea.

You may also become more prone to infections. It is widely accepted that stress and anxiety can lower your immune system, making you more susceptible to picking up colds or more serious illnesses. With excessive worry, our immune system has little time to recover and you become even more tired or lethargic.

Look after yourself and try to not allow stress to get the better of you.
